So you think you can fence already...?

New in town and looking for a fencing club? Or perhaps you’re just after a change in scene? If you’ve already got a bit of experience in fencing, then AUF has a lot to offer.

AUF has a large number of regular attendees with skills ranging from the beginner to competitive fencers at the national level. Our excellent coach, Andrew Imms, provides lessons in foil, epee and sabre for those interested. We have a strong presence at all the regional Auckland tournaments, which are held monthly, as well as the big national ones. We pride ourselves on our relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and we have a vibrant social scene with a great bunch of people. We’re primarily a foil and epee club but we can be talked into doing sabre if you’re that way inclined.

Club sessions start with a warm-up game to stretch the muscles and maintain a bit of fitness. We then have group stretches and a footwork session led by our coach on Mondays or one of the senior fencers on Thursdays. After that it’s into free fencing and individual lessons until we finish about 9 pm. We have three electric scoring sets which can cater for all three weapons although typically two are dedicated to foil and one to epee. One-on-one lessons with our coach are part of the club fee, and are usually around 15-20 minutes each- these are definitely the best way to improve fencing technique. We wrap each evening up by going down to Forde’s Front Bench bar on Anzac St (Auckland’s best kept secret on the pub scene) for the all-important warm-down and a chat.

Our club nights are Monday and Thursday, 7 pm to 9 pm, located at the Auckland University Recreation Centre. We have plenty of gear, from jackets and masks to electric weapons, so we can cover you if you’re short or don't have gear handy. Everyone is always welcome, students or non-students.
