Pre-season training

A little like the last column, but a little different.

January is hot, very hot. We don't want to be in three layers. We do want to be outside. You might suggest we fence outside with no protective gear, but I've tried that already. Not recommended (unless you like bloodsports).

Perhaps you could be outdoors doing 'pre season training', which is basically anything which gets you fitter which isn't fencing. I suggested some stuff in the last column. I don't think I did it much longer. Working out is hard. You should throw in some liberal doses of gym working out too.

It doesn't neccessarily have to be 'fitness training' either. I spent a large part of summer tramping and climbing. When I got back this made a great platform for pre-season development.

But it also pays to keep the fencing up throughout summer casually/socially/etc. This way you don't come back in March and pick-up the wrong end of the sword (and .when you turn it round still wonder why it feels so unnatural). Get some friends together (or worse case just people you fence with) and have a bash. Make it a BBQ or something. You could even do it outside (but do where the protective gear).

And on another note - congrats to our U20 team in Australia. Hopefully we will see them come through universities (ours) soon. I remember my first (and only) Oz U20s well (well, mostly). Now let us never speak of it again.
