Here is where James is going to place his column. He always has such interesting and insightful things to say (honestly James, you do) so it was only fair to give him his own space.

So here is what James has to say (excerpted from post on FenMan site - 09 Jul 2002)

The Three-Pronged Approach to NZ Fencing

At the risk of opening pandora's box, I see three issues with fencing in New Zealand that are preventing progress - the problem is all three are related and tend to require one to get another:

we need more money
we need more junior fencers
we need more elite (international) fencers

1 => 3, 2 => 1, 3 => 2

I'm sure anyone who has thought about the situation realises this though.

Realistically we need to tackle all of them at once, but obviously it would be best to emphasise the one that would provide the most immediate result.

Holistically, I suggest FeNZ appoint an advertising manager as a priority. Somebody whose position it solely is to advertise fencing to NZ. Individuals have tried in the past, but it never seems to have been very centrally organised (i.e. with a greater goal).

This also needs to be done on a logical level.

We have 3-4 "bodies" in NZ fencing.

National level (FeNZ)
Regional level (Districts)
Club level (duh - clubs)
There's also Uni fencing, which sorta exists outside all 3.

I urge everyone to become involved in at least one of these levels (no more than two though). Whenever an issue arises consider at what scale it is applicable, and thus whose jurisdiction it falls under.

There's also the individual level - but I'm sure we are all involved in that one already.

(In the future I shall expand on this some more, or perhaps find something else of the moment to espouse knowledge upon).
