Transparent mask fail

Postby Fifi » Sat Feb 13, 2010 5:39 am

Thinking of buying one of those crazy "Vision2000" masks so we can all see what kind of faces you make when you lunge? Think again. This just in from Laura:

Hi all,

Just received a letter from the FIE following the results of the report into the visor that shattered in a junior competition last year.
Please let your athletes know:

Therefore, the Executive Committee has decided to suspend and
forbid, until further notice, the use of the transparent visor mask
both in foil and epee, at all FIE official competitions.

Cheers,
Laura

Ha, this whole visor mask thing is such a clusterfu.. I don't even know why the FIE wants to bring them in.

It's this whole television thing. It's got to be interesting to watch, so they can sell more advertising. And what's more interesting to watch than a kid with a foil through his sinus?

This debate has been on for at least a dozen years or so. From the beginning, the fencers were against it, only FIE liked the whole idea. And this incidence reminds me of the time a few years ago, when an famous epeeist (well, famous in certain parts of this world ... I think it was Srecki) took his epee and stabbed it right through one of those transparent masks. It didn't make the masks more popular with fencers, but FIE was undeterred. I'm pleased to see that transparent masks are finally prohibited, but hope the kid is alright.

The bottom line is: don't buy those stupid transparent masks!
