Each semester, Auckland University Fencing runs a beginners course in conjunction with the University of Auckland Recreation Centre.
The course is four weeks long and will teach you all the basic techniques required in a simple bout.
A mask, jacket and a visual foil will be provided to all participants as they are required to fence. For this reason, numbers in the course are limited. Sign up early.
The beginners’ course is part of the Recreation Centre’s Programmes at The University of Auckland. Enrolments are handled by them so, you must find their enrolment office on the 4th floor of the recreation centre. Ask for help at the reception if you get lost.
Enrolments for Semester Two open Monday 18th July (week 1) and run for two weeks. Last semester, places filled up in two days, so sign up earlier rather than later.
The course costs $60 if you are a member of the Recreation Centre, and $70 if you are not.
The course is taught at The University of Auckland Recreation Centre located on the university campus.
The course is taught on Mondays at 7.00pm to 9pm in the 3rd to 6th weeks of each semester. The course is four weeks long. Specific dates will usually be posted on this website near the beginning of the course.
Dates for Semester Two 2011 are Monday 1st August (week 3) through to Monday 22nd August (week 6).
For training purposes, the best clothes to wear are tracksuit pants and a t-shirt. Non-marking gym shoes like squash shoes are also advisable.
We don’t provide gloves so it might be a good idea to bring a glove for your dominant hand. The gloves can be gardening, golf gloves for example.
Everyone is able to fence; it’s not as dangerous as it looks. The French can fence, so can you.
You can join the club for a discounted fee and continue to be coached by the senior members of the club. You can fence up to two times a week (Monday and Wednesday) and priority to club gear will be given to fencers in their first year (you). Just simply show up at the recreation centre at 7pm on Monday or Wednesday and let us know. We can be found on the gym courts on Monday, and Upstairs Dance Studio on Wednesdays.
